The Owl Who Found a Wallet
3 turns · 7 pages of canon
Describe the characters in your story: - Hoot (male) — a small brown barn owl with oversized round glasses, a tiny black beret and a patched navy scarf. A stubby quill is always tucked behind one ear. He starts the story clean, hopeful and a little too polite. By the last page his scarf is scorched at the edge and one lens is cracked. - Bagsy (female) — a round teal frog in a courier vest plastered with expired airdrop stickers, riding a battered skateboard. Gold tooth, permanent smirk. She never stops moving and never stops talking. - The Whale (no fixed gender, always shown as a shape rather than a person) — an enormous blue-grey silhouette that only ever appears as a shadow across a wall, a reflection in a puddle, or a shape behind frosted glass. Never fully drawn. Characters when changing environment, appearance, clothing: The story runs through one night. It begins in the neon night market, moves into a flooded back alley, and ends on a rooftop above the market. As the night goes on the rain gets heavier: Hoot's beret sags, his scarf soaks through and tears, and the crowd's phone lights replace the market signs as the only light source. Detailed content of your story: A night market built out of dead exchange booths. Broken signs still blink TO THE MOON over stalls selling instant noodles and hardware keys. Rain is starting. Hoot is walking home with a bag of noodles when he steps on something soft in a puddle — a fat leather wallet, cracked and heavy, no name on it. He picks it up. It is warm, like someone dropped it seconds ago. Bagsy skids to a stop beside him and immediately starts arguing that whoever lost it does not deserve it back. Their argument gets loud. Phones come out. A crowd forms in a half circle in the rain, everyone filming, nobody helping. Somewhere above them, a huge shadow moves across the wall of the building opposite. The market noise drops. Every screen in the crowd flickers at the same moment. Hoot stands in the middle of the circle, soaked, holding the wallet with both hands, thumb resting on the clasp. Bagsy is telling him to open it. A hundred strangers are waiting to see what he does. End the opening exactly there — on Hoot's thumb on the clasp, wallet still closed. Do not show what is inside. Do not resolve the choice.
